Night markets (pasar malam) in Penang by day: what the councils publish

Which night markets run on which day of the week on the mainland, from the council's own list, and what the island council does and does not publish about its night markets.

On the mainland, the council (MBSP) publishes a list of its night markets with the day each one runs, last updated on 1 January 2025; the table below sets it out by day and district. On the island, the council (MBPP) licenses night markets but publishes no list of where or on which day they run, so there is no island table.

The short version

Mainland night markets by day

From MBSP's lists for Seberang Perai Utara (north), Seberang Perai Tengah (central) and Seberang Perai Selatan (south), all marked as updated on 1 January 2025. A market that runs on more than one day appears on each of its days.

What the lists do not say. They give no start or finish times, and they say nothing about markets closing for festivals or bad weather. Most organisers are the local village community council (MPKK).

Why some markets are missing. On 15 July 2026, at the launch of its Pasar Malam Bersih 2026 cleanliness campaign, MBSP said 75 night market sites operate in Seberang Perai: 21 in the north, 30 in the centre and 24 in the south. The published lists are shorter in each district, so treat them as a partial list.

Island night markets: what MBPP publishes

MBPP's Licensing Department (Jabatan Pelesenan) licenses night markets on the island and approves new ones, but only from permitted organisers such as an MPKK or a residents' association. Its department page has a line for the number of night markets, but the number is left blank, and no list of sites or days is published on MBPP's website.

The only count in print is old. In November 2020, Buletin Mutiara, the state government's newspaper, reported MBPP saying that 42 night market organisers on the island would benefit from a licence fee waiver.

MBPP's rules for organisers (its guideline amended in 2024, in force from 26 November 2024) tell you what to expect at an island night market:

If you want the day and place of an island night market, MBPP's Licensing Department is the body that holds the list.
