Wet markets in Penang: the council public markets on the island and the mainland

The public markets run by MBPP on the island and MBSP on the mainland, as the two councils name them, with the opening hours in print.

On the mainland, MBSP publishes the name and address of every public market it runs, in three district lists. On the island, MBPP publishes no single list, but it names its markets on its own pages, and neither council publishes opening hours for its markets.

The short version

Island: MBPP public markets

MBPP's Licensing Department plans, runs and maintains the council's markets, food complexes and hawker sites. It does not publish a list of them. These are the markets MBPP itself names:

The stall notice is MBPP's round of empty stalls with interviews on 18 September 2026. It lists only markets that had a stall free, so a market missing from it may still be open.

Hours. Batu Lanchang Public Market opens daily from noon until 6pm and has 241 stalls, Buletin Mutiara reported in July 2026, when MBPP entered it in a national clean market campaign. No hours are published for any other MBPP market.

A morning market. The Island Glades Morning Market at Lorong Delima 6, Seri Delima, near SMK Hamid Khan, opened officially in January 2026 with 76 licensed traders, supported by MBPP. It runs daily from 7am to 12pm, Buletin Mutiara reported.

Building work. In December 2024, MBPP said it had set aside RM8 million to build Teluk Kumbar Market and Food Complex and RM2 million to upgrade Bayan Baru Complex and Market. No later report says either is finished.

Paying council bills at the market. Since July 2026 a self-service MBPP kiosk at the Tanjung Bungah Food Complex and Market takes assessment tax and compound payments, cashless only.

Seberang Jaya has moved. MBSP's list still names the temporary Seberang Jaya market. In March 2025, Utusan Malaysia reported MBSP's mayor saying traders and tenants of the temporary market, where they had been since 1 March 2019, had until 15 April 2025 to move to the new Seberang Jaya public market. MBSP's list gives no address for the new market.
