Farmers markets (pasar tani) in Penang: the three on FAMA's 2026 list

Where and when the federal agricultural marketing authority (FAMA) says Penang's farmers markets run in 2026, what a pasar tani is, and the rules for selling at one.

FAMA's 2026 list names three farmers markets (pasar tani) in Penang: Balik Pulau and Tasek Gelugor on Sunday mornings, and Bagan Ajam on Saturday evenings. A pasar tani is a market where growers sell their own produce straight to shoppers.

The three markets

Balik PulauJalan Tun Sardon, Balik PulauSunday7am to 1pm
Tasek GelugorJalan Pasar Awam, Tasek Gelugor, Seberang Perai UtaraSunday7am to 1pm
Bagan AjamCar park at Tembok Bagan AjamSaturday4pm to 10pm

The list gives one day and one set of hours per market. It gives no holiday closures, so ring or look before a long trip on a public holiday.

What a pasar tani is

FAMA describes the idea as a market where producers sell what they grow or make directly to consumers, a "meeting point" for producer and consumer. The first one opened on 31 January 1985 at FAMA's cold room at Tampoi, Johor Bahru.

MBPP's market guideline defines the same thing for the island: a temporary market that sells farm goods, where farmers or livestock keepers sell to the public themselves, with no middleman, held weekly in the morning or the afternoon. The guideline says these markets are take-away only, with no tables and chairs for customers unless a special approval is given.

Permanent farmers markets are a different list

FAMA also runs Pasar Tani Kekal (PTK), which it says differs from the ordinary pasar tani because it runs all week instead of weekly or occasionally. FAMA's pages list no Penang PTK, so the table above covers only the ordinary markets.

If you want to sell at one

FAMA's conditions for a stall at a pasar tani:

On the island, MBPP's guideline sets the trader's licence for night, morning, weekend and farmers markets at RM36.00 a year for each trader. It says that to organise a night, morning or weekend market the council considers only applications from bodies such as a village community management council (MPKK) or a residents' association, and that for a pasar tani it considers only an application from FAMA.
