Penang bridge tolls (tol jambatan) and which way you pay

A car pays RM5.74 on either bridge, only on the way onto the island, and motorcycles cross free. The rate for every vehicle class, and how JustGO and PLUS's 20% Penang Bridge discount work.

A car pays RM5.74 to cross the second bridge (Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge), as its operator publishes today, and the Penang Bridge car toll was cut to the same RM5.74 in 2020; on both bridges the toll is charged only on the way onto the island, and motorcycles have crossed free since 2019. The ferry carries people, bicycles and motorcycles, not cars, between Butterworth and George Town every 20 to 30 minutes from 6:30am to 11:30pm, for RM2.00 an adult.

The second bridge: Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge (JSAHMS)

JKSB, the bridge's operator, publishes these toll rates:

ClassVehicleToll
1Car (two axles, three or four wheels, not a taxi or bus)RM5.74
2Two axles and six wheels (not a bus)RM30.50
3Three or more axles (not a bus)RM70.10
4TaxiRM8.50
5Bus, school bus or factory vanRM26.20

Which way you pay, as published in 2014. When the bridge opened, Malay Mail reported that the bridge toll is one way: you pay heading from Batu Kawan on the mainland to Batu Maung on the island, and not coming back. The Bandar Cassia toll plaza on the link road to the North-South Expressway (NSE) charges both ways, so drivers coming from the island who leave by the NSE paid a separate RM0.60 there in 2014. JKSB's toll page does not list the Bandar Cassia plaza.

Closures and holiday discounts. JKSB posts lane closures, works and event closures under Important Notices on its public portal; its hotline is 1-300-30-2828. It sometimes cuts the toll for festivals: for Chinese New Year 2026 it gave Class 1 cars 50% off on 14 and 15 February.

The Penang Bridge

The car toll, as published in 2020. Free Malaysia Today reported in January 2020 that the Penang Bridge toll for cars would be cut from 1 February 2020. The cut came with a 20-year extension of PLUS's concession to 2058, and the government said there would be no toll increase in that period. For the current toll, check PLUS's own website.

Which way you pay, as published in 2014. Malay Mail reported that drivers on the first bridge pay one way, heading into the island.

JustGO. Since 23 September 2026, Bernama reports, the Penang Bridge accepts JustGO, a number plate toll payment system: cameras read your registered plate and the toll is charged to the card linked in the JustGO app, in any lane. At the Bandar Cassia plaza, JustGO works only in the RFID lanes marked with a red circle.

Who gets the 20% discount. PLUS's own terms for its Jimat di Penang programme (updated 26 August 2026) give 20% off the toll at the Penang Bridge toll plaza only, and you apply in one of three categories:

Each account gets one 20% discount, through one payment method: the JustGO app, an RFID e-wallet or a bank card. Apply in the JustGO app if you pay by JustGO, or on PLUS's Jimat di Penang portal for RFID, bank card or Touch 'n Go. PLUS says it replies in 3 days for residents and 7 days for workers, students and companies.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles have crossed both bridges free since 1 January 2019, when the toll for motorcyclists was abolished (as published in 2019).

The ferry

The Penang Port Commission (SPPP) runs the ferry between Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal in Butterworth and Raja Tun Uda Terminal at Pengkalan Weld, George Town. It carries people, bicycles and motorcycles, not cars, from 06:30 to 23:30 every day, every 20 minutes at peak times and 30 minutes otherwise; an adult pays RM2.00 and a motorcycle RM2.50.

The full timetable, every fare, how to pay and what has changed since the new ferries came in are in Penang ferry schedule and fares.
