Get rid of a sofa, mattress or fridge in Penang

Both city councils collect bulky waste such as old furniture and mattresses. What MBPP and MBSP publish about collection days, who to call for a big load, and where a fridge or a usable sofa can go instead.

The short version

Which council are you in?

Penang has two city councils. Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP) covers the island. Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai (MBSP) covers the mainland. The sections below follow that split.

Seberang Perai: MBSP

MBSP's page "Jadual Kutipan Sampah dan Pegawai Kawasan" lists a 2026 schedule for domestic waste and for bulky and garden waste ("sisa pukal / sisa kebun"). There is one PDF per zone, from Zon 1 Penaga to Zon 32 Sungai Acheh.

Each zone PDF lists housing areas (taman) one per row. For each one it gives:

ColumnWhat it tells you
DomestikYour household rubbish schedule: A, B or C
PukalThe day of the week for bulky waste collection

The same PDF names the depot and gives contact numbers for the area's supervisors. For example, the Zon 11 Seberang Jaya A schedule lists Depo Permatang Pauh on 04-5305764. Some rows show no bulky day. If yours is blank, call the depot on your zone's PDF.

MBSP's cleansing services page also says garden waste (sampah kebun) is collected once a week, on Saturday or Sunday.

Penang island: MBPP

MBPP's Municipal Services Department (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Perbandaran) lists "Perkhidmatan Pengurusan Sisa Pukal & Kebun" among its services: bulky and garden waste management.

MBPP's waste management page (dated 30 January 2023) links collection schedules for each state constituency. The one for N32 Seri Delima and N33 Air Itam, as published in 2023, includes pages headed "Jadual Pungutan Sampah (Sisa Pukal)", listing streets by collection round. These schedules are scanned images and do not say whether they are still current.

In January 2026, ahead of Chinese New Year, MBPP said:

That announcement was for a 10-day festive period (7 to 16 February 2026). It also listed extra bins for furniture, mattresses and pillows at several public markets during those days. The announcement does not say the bins stay after the festive period.

Garden waste and drop-off

Penang Green Council's FAQ (from its directory, last updated 3 July 2024) says to contact the councils' Municipal Services Departments for garden waste and for bulky waste such as furniture:

WhoNumber
MBPP Jabatan Perkhidmatan Perbandaran04-2633000
MBSP Jabatan Perkhidmatan Perbandaran04-5497654
Batu Maung Transfer Station (Eurasia Express Sdn Bhd), drop-off only04-2816510

These numbers are as listed in July 2024. The FAQ does not give hours or fees for the Batu Maung drop-off. Call before you drive there.

A fridge, washing machine or TV

Penang Green Council lists the refrigerator and washing machine as e-waste. E-waste should go to a registered collector, not out with the rubbish. Our e-waste guide covers where it can go.

A sofa or bed that still has life in it

The Salvation Army's page for its thrift stores, as published in 2023, said it accepted furniture and household items "still in good and working condition". It said collection of bulky items like furniture and large appliances could be arranged through its national booking channels. Ask the Salvation Army whether it collects in Penang before you go: what is known about its Penang thrift store is in our donation guide.
