Zakat Penang: how to pay Zakat MAINPP, counters and tax receipts
The practical side of paying zakat in Penang, the ways Zakat MAINPP takes payment, online, by salary deduction, at Pos Malaysia and at its own counters, where the counters are, and how to get and keep the receipt for the income tax rebate, as Zakat MAINPP and LHDN publish it.
In Penang, zakat is paid to Zakat MAINPP, the zakat body of the Penang Islamic Religious Council (Majlis Agama Islam Negeri Pulau Pinang), online through its Portal Zakat Pulau Pinang, by online banking, by monthly salary deduction (Skim Sakinah), at selected Pos Malaysia counters, or at its own counters. LHDN gives a resident taxpayer a tax rebate for zakat paid to a religious authority, up to the tax charged for the year, so keep the Zakat MAINPP receipt for seven years.

Paying online
Zakat MAINPP's payment page points to its online payment portal, Portal Zakat Pulau Pinang, at zakatpenang2u.com. Zakat MAINPP says payments there are processed in real time and that a receipt is issued within a set period.
On the portal you can:
- pay zakat harta (zakat on wealth, such as income, savings, gold and silver, EPF, business, crops and livestock, and shares);
- pay zakat fitrah;
- work out an amount with the online calculator;
- check your record of zakat payments and print your payment receipts.
Zakat MAINPP's payment page also says you can pay directly through a number of banks and digital payment channels. Its page shows them as logos: Maybank, Bank Rakyat, BSN, Touch 'n Go eWallet, MyEG, Shopee and ikhlas.

Monthly salary deduction: Skim Sakinah
Skim Sakinah is Zakat MAINPP's monthly zakat deduction from salary. Zakat MAINPP says it is open to Muslim employees of government, statutory bodies and the private sector. You apply on an online form, giving your personal details, your employer and its payroll department, and the monthly amount; the form sets a minimum of RM10 a month and asks you to authorise your employer to deduct it.

Your receipt and the income tax rebate
LHDN, Malaysia's tax authority, says an individual resident in Malaysia with taxable income can claim a tax rebate for zakat, fitrah or other payments required by Islam made to a religious authority set up under written law, and that the rebate is limited to the income tax charged for that year of assessment. LHDN counts all types of zakat paid in the calendar year.
What to do:
- Keep the receipt for every zakat payment. Online payers can print receipts from Portal Zakat Pulau Pinang.
- Claim the rebate when you file your income tax return.
- You do not send the receipt with the return, but LHDN lists the zakat receipt as a supporting document you must keep for seven years from the year you file.
