Kayes, is this the loke thye kee restaurant? i remember going for many wedding dinners here when i was a child with my parents, on the second floor. a lot of our hainanese neighbours liked to hold their weddings there in the seventies. So sad to see in such a forlorn state, remembered the food was really yummy back then.... the kiam chye boey especially...

I think it was Overseas Trading. One of the partners' daughter worked in my office for a few years.

HP, I think they imported many board games too like Monopoly and also Lego sets.

And Daphne, sorry I overlooked to answer your question. Yes, it was that famous Loke Thye Kee restaurant. The "main entrance" was a small staircase facing Burmah Road and the kitchen extended to right below the staircase. So you were walking over your food as your climbed up :-)

Jim, the food at the original Loke Thye Kee was very good, truly nyonya dishes. Then it changed owners in the 90s and the standard dropped somewhat but I still liked the place. I always sat in the verandah and watched the world go by.

If you go further North along Pinang Road, just near the Police Headquarters, and on the same side, there used to be another resteraunt, closed now. That also was quite good

Hi Jim,
Is it the corner restaurant beside the police hq? I remember it to be something like FMS Ipoh with swing doors. I used to go there cos they had those delicious cream puffs. I wonder what became of this restaurant.

Yes, thats the one Jim. Forgot to mention the food which was good too. On our trips to Penang, we would sometimes have lunch here or at Loke Thye Kee and as Kayes mentioned, sitting at the verandah was a good place to watch the world go by. I liked their Hainanese Chicken Curry.

I have not seen any publicity for the Penang Times Square Hotel at all! Did you stay at the G Hotel and was Marco helpful?

I settled for Traders in the end Kayes.I didn't make contact with the 'G' but may consider it for my trip next Chinese New Year. That's if the pound sterling hasn't collapsed by then!
I think the PTS Hotel may be a later phase of the construction.

I just showed my son this picture, about 2 minutes ago,he is 31yrs Old now,and I asked him if he remembered it.He remembered the beautiful fried rice.He would have been 15-16yrs old the last time his mother and I took him there. But still remembers the Fried Rice and the money changer on the corner,to the right of the picture.
