hello David, the renovations at the Golden Sands affect only Sigi's by the Sea and not so much the main building. They are expected to be completed by February 2009.

My daughter and son in law have just returned from Penang with some sad news. We have been regular visitors to the area over many years but it seems that the BF beach area is now almost a no-go area due to litter and sewage. I have to say it's been going downhill for many years but how can the authorities allow this. How can the new hotels, Rasa Sayang, Hard Rock and even the iconic Lone Pine, which I understand is re-inventing itself, how can they allow this great resort area to continue to decline. Is it lack of finance or do Penangites simply not care?

hello Lee, as you know I live in Batu Ferringhi, Penang. I walk (or jog) the beach at least once a week. Sometimes the beach area is clean but sometimes not. In the mornings I usually see one person cleaning up the beach in front of the Rasa Sayang and the Golden Sands. Not sure whether this chap cleans up to the Lone Pine beach front which is just one hotel away. A couple of years ago, I used to see a "beach cleaning machine" which was bought specially to clean the Batu Ferringhi beach. I don't see that contraption anymore and so I assume it is lying idle somewhere for lack of spare parts. I would say cleanliness on the whole island is somewhat erratic. If there is a surge in complaints, some knees jerk and they clean up the place. Then it is back to shaking legs. Some people say the authorities are not doing enough. The authorities say the locals are not sufficiently civic conscious.

Does anyone ever test the water quality for e coli etc up at BF? More importantly are the results in the public domain? I used to windsurf off Tanjong Bungah in the 1980's and if I fell in I would sprint back to the house and hose myself down from the outside tap as there was a lot of pig farm effluent discharged around there.

hi Mike, Penang has become a busy port since the 60s and 70s. Most of the time the sea lanes are choked with traffic and the change in tidal flow has caused diesel discharged from sea going vessels to arrive in Tanjong Bungah and Batu Ferringhi. Penang is not really the place to swim and if it is not the water quality, it is the jellyfish. In fact, most of the beach hotels have prominent signboards warning guests not to swim because of the presence of jellyfish.

If you used to windsurf in the 80s off Tanjong Bungah, then you will surely know Tony Khaw, the Service Manager of Lowe Motors. Tony was a windsurfing nut and on weekends, if I couldn't find him in his house, I would just drive over to the Chinese Swimming Club beach and yell for him.
