Kayes,I ask your indulgence,if I may? in this area of Georgetown there was a Toy Shop,I believe ERAWAN?I recal buying my Niece and Nephew some toys for Christmas thereat,I thought Bishop Street, but could be wrong.I also recollect a Bar/Bar at the intersection of Jln Masjid Kapitan Kling and,I think Lebuh Geraja, that had Blue Batwing Doors.I would appreciate your help,if nothing else it keeps my grey matter active. Cheers

Jim, you are right about that toy shop being at Bishop Street but the name was Eng Wan and it was at the junction of Bishop Street and King Street. Up to the 1970s, it was THE toy shop in Penang and many Penangites must have grown up playing with toys bought from there. The owner is a friend of mine, Teoh Thin Lam. In the early 90s he closed the shop, sold the building and now lives in Australia.

You are right again about the bar. It is at the junction of Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling and Church Street. It is still there but I can't remember the name. I have a pic of it somewhere. Will try to find it. The swing doors are still intact.

Thanks Mate,'Eng Wan' was indeed the name, and a wonderful range they had,I myself took particular interest in the Mamod range, but I am also interested in another Toy Shop in Pulau Tikus, just off Burmah Road, between Burmah Road and Jln Kelawei, heading South East.In relation to the bar with the 'Blue Batwing Doors'.Now thats a nice story,a tale of how really 'Nice' Malaysian People Can be

Greetings 'Kayes' & Jim,

I'm wondering if the shop Jim mentions was the shop my dear friend, Dickey Lam had in Pulau Tikus, from where he sold toys as well as prams in the 70's, as well as other infant paraphernalia.

Interestingly I note he has the same name as the guy at 'Eng Wan', and would not be surprised to find they are related.

Cheers
