Email from Gurney Khera (gurneykhera@hotmail.com}

"My father named me after Gurney Drive. I lived in Penang from 1972 to 1979. These are the fondest memories of my life. Aah the famous brothers cooking Kway Teow with real kerang.. aah the smells of the freshly cooked jagung (corn) wafting from the baskets, the fishy sea smell and mud crabs darting from rock to rock as the moonlight shines on upon them. I was a student at Francis Light School, then Penang Free before we migrated to Adelaide, Australia. Adelaide, a sister city to Georgetown, was founded by Francis Light's son, William Light. Penang, Gurney Drive , Batu Ferringhi, Pulau Tikus, Jesselton Heights, and the Penang Turf Club where my father played golf with Tunku Abdul Rahman.. these memories will stay in my mind and my heart. I will be back in Penang in December this year.. (2009)

One of the saddest days of my life was when my family left Penang for Adelaide, Australia. I still recall that feeling of dread and misery. Why leave this tropical paradise of multicultural people and natural beauty ? I lived there for 8 years, attended primary schooling and Form 1, from 1972 to 1979. My formative years were in Penang. My grandfather died in our house in Jesselton Rd. My father was a surgeon at the Penang General Hospital. My heart yearns to return, to live and breathe again in Penang. Thank you so so much for this web site. I would like all Penangites to unite in one voice to celebrate this special island so dear to our hearts. To all of Penang's expatriates , I call upon us to re-unite together at a mutually suitable date to dance and sing our joyful praises, to help keep the charms of Penang from being destroyed forever".
