I recall that in the mid-90s my spouse, together with my sisters were on a cruise ship from Singapore that called at Penang for a day-trip ashore. I was then, coincidentally attending to a trouble-shooting assignment at a metal fabrication factory in a nearby industrial park at Seberang Prai; but did not have a chance to meet up with the cruise party. So near & yet so far..

In the 70s and 80s there was a cruise liner called the Rasa Sayang that provided short cruises from Singapore/Penang/Phuket and I wonder whether this ship is still in service. By today's standards, the Rasa Sayang is version 1.0 and would need a huge upgrade. I feel claustrophobic on board any ship and therefore I don't think I can last a long cruise Smile

On 13 March 2017, a total of 5 ocean cruise liners called at Swettenham Pier in George Town Penang and this is a record! Thousands of tourists disembarked from the Diamond Princess, Mein Schiff I, Superstar Gemini, Leisure World and the Star Clipper to enjoy the Pearl of the Orient.
