Before the two bridges were built, this ferry was the only way to get your car across from Penang Island to the mainland. From the George Town side, during the old days, the queue of cars could stretch from the ferry terminal in Weld Quay to the State Legislative Assembly building in Light Street and on the Butterworth side, the queue could be up to the Chartered Bank and beyond.

All kids loved the ferry ride though. I remember meeting busloads of RAAF school children laughing and screaming in their buses. And my first ferry ride as a child was truly enjoyable when the sea water splashed on to the car during rough seas.

Just before my very first ferry ride, I was very excited because I was told in Cantonese: "Yan Chor Cheh, Cheh Chor Shin". (People sit in car, car sits in ferry Smile ). I was also asked to throw coins into the sea during the ferry ride. But when I asked why, I was given this answer: "DON'T ASK!!".

Love the reflections on the sea. Marvellous shot!
