My office was here (next to OCBC Bank) for many years. In the 70s and 80s, this part of Beach Street was very very busy, often choked with traffic. Later, many offices started to move out elsewhere and this improved the situation somewhat but the remaining banks still contributed to the congestion, with double parking the main culprit. The brown building on the right used to be Kee Huat Radio which many Penangites would remember as THE PLACE to get your radio, TV, washing machines, refrigerators, cookers etc. It was owned by the Tye family. Presently, this part of Beach Street is closed to traffic every Sunday and you can see many activities taking place here.

This pic shows the same part of Beach Street and was taken in 2004, before the entire block was completely restored by OCBC Bank, the owners. Looks quite a bit like a dump.
