Hi Kayes, we were recently in Penang and decided to visit the restored Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. There are conducted tours three times a day and we went on the one scheduled for 1.30pm. We thought it would be hot but the house inside was surprisingly cool. The tour took about an hour to complete and we were glad to see that the house had been painstakingly restored.
We were told a few surprising facts like that there were no toilets in the entire house. Everything was done in the 'spittoons' that were found in every room!
Another interesting fact was that the kitchen and servants' quarters were in a separate row of town houses, facing the mansion.
However it was rather sad to know that none of the Cheong family descendants were involved the restoration.

Thanks Blue Grass for the interesting "tour". We just missed the scheduled tour the last time when we were there.

'Spittoons' in every room - I think it's the norm during those days. I have a friend who is still staying in the upstairs of a long shop house in Banting told me she and her husband have to take a "long walk" along the passage way to the back of the shop house whenever this newly wed couple have to use the toilet. How romantic!! Smile Imagine this newly married couple walk hand-in-hand to the back of the shop in the middle of the night - just to use the toilet! It would be more romantic if there is moonlight ..... Wink

"If you think it's romantic, take it if you want! What we desperately need now is a bathroom attached!" she just told me - angrily.:(
