Hi Kayes, Whilst everyone will agree 'Rapid Penang' is such a vast improvement on the old buses that still ply on the islands roads. I know they have not been running for many years but we remember there innaugeration. But how standards slip, great fuss was made at Komtar only allowing Rapid buses to use the 2 outside lanes in the bus station, much to the annoyance of the other users. The police were even used to keep order but sadly that did not last long as the other users deliberately hold up the rapid buses. If you are returning to Tanjong Bungha late in the evening the buses will divert at Tonjong Tokong in order to refuel and there are normally 2 or 3 more rapids also waiting to fuel so it could add up to at least a hour to your journey. But saying all that we spend 3 months in Penang and use the rapids all the time, I thinks its a case of getting the timing right.

Hullo Penang-talkers, can anyone shed light on the public bus service in Penang now? When we last visited in December 2011 the privately-run buses were apparently on strike in protest to not getting equal diesel fuel subsidy as the Rapid Penang buses or something to that effect. As we out-of-towners had always relied on our Rapid Penang tourist passports, we found that the RP buses were heavily over-loaded & cannot cope with the deluge of passengers; resulting in our sight-seeing plans being stymied. Any improvements to the situation now- as we are looking to visit our fave "Pearl of the Orient" island again this year...
