hello Yeap. most of the hawkers are congregated towards the centre of Kimberley Street, near the junction with Cintra Street. The famous char kway teow is right at the junction by the roadside. There is also a hawker centre in that area.

I am trying to find out where Jalan Ooi Thiam Siew is. It is named after one of Penang's early mayor of the 1960s. He died in a car accident in December 1968 I believe. His daughter, Ooi Cheng Gaik, was a brilliant student of Penang Free School who scored 8 As in her school cambridge exam. Anyone knows any more about the late Mr. ooi Thiam Siew? Would appreciate some details of his early life as I am trying to write his biography to send to a friend. Thanks.

hello and welcome to Penang Talk. You can try to contact Benny who is Cheng Gaik's younger brother. I have not seen Benny for some time but if you email the Penang Club, they might give you his contact. I used to know Cheng Gaik when she attended the Burmah Road Gospel Hall in the 60s. Good luck Smile

Hi Kayes,Along Kimberley Street there used to be the Ah Chew Bar(It was also a Hotel)I am told it has been closed down now?I often used to go there for a drink, nothing else, and there was an elderly Chinese Lady who served behind the bar there, she had actually been born in the Hotel.A very interesting Lady to talk to with a lot of stories of Pinangs past.Another bit of history gone

I GOT A QUESTION FOR YOU EXPERTS!!!!!
I'm currently in Penang on holiday and on the way to live permanently in the land of the great red dust cloud known as Australia. I've been reading the book "Kinta valley:pioneering malaysia's development" but need a decent map to be able to explore Kinta valley area in detail. I can't seem to buy one and have been recommended to get a GPS BUT I only need it for a week or so and so am unwilling to invest unless I can reload it with Australian details. Anyone know more about the possibilites of this, got a recommended GPS type to buy???

I can answer my own question! Went to Gurney plaza today and bought a Garmin GPS with Msia, Spore, Oz and NZ in it all for RM899. I was the only person in the whole store buying anything!
