He was called "taikor" to differentiate him from the foreman of the City Motors branch in Penang who is also an Ah Seng. He deserved to be Taikor in every way because he had a more in depth knowledge of Alfa Romeos and of course, his voice was also louder. I knew Taikor Seng ever since I bought my first new GTV2000 (PQ7227) in 1974. Whenever my Alfas were sent to City Motors Ipoh, he was the one who attended to them and once when my week old Alfetta GTV(PP777) broke down in Chemor due to carburetor problems, Taikor Seng was at the scene in no time driving an Alfasud after I sent him a distress call. He left City Motors to go to Canada to be a mechanic there but after a short time, he was back in Ipoh and he partnered with Wah Chye to open a motor workshop in Pasir Putih. At that workshop he looked after my 1300Ti (AM7557) and also a GTV2000 (AQ848). I asked him why he left Canada so quickly and he answered me in Cantonese in his usual loud way, "it was so cold that the spanner got stuck to my hand often, how to do any work there!". Subsequently he went over to the Jalan Bendahara area and had his own workshop but I never saw him again there because I just couldn't locate the place despite directions given to me by friends. City Motors enjoyed the glory in racing in the 60s and 70s and Taikor Seng was certainly a part of it. Pic below shows Taikor Seng. He is standing in the centre of the front row, on the right of Eddie Choong who is wearing a tie. Albert Poon, Foo Wan Kien and Hor Lan Tung are also there. Liam, thanks for informing us. Yesterday you posted a message on a 2004 thread concerning GTAs and said you could not view the pics of the GTA I posted 7 years ago. Due to server space constraints, this board does not keep images for more than 3 years. Anyway, if you will post a new message on the front page, I will see whether I still have the photos of that particular GTA which was sent to me by CH Fu, I think. |
